What it means to be a member of the Spanish Lookout EMMC congregation — and what it does not.
We consider all those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord as our brothers and sisters. They are all part of the universal Body of Christ. One's place in the Body of Christ is a sacred position, given by Christ through our faith in His sacrifice.
At the same time, Christians congregate in different places — to participate, to fellowship, and to devote themselves to one another in Christian love. Congregational membership, as we practice it here, is practical and not sacred.
Congregational membership is not strictly outlined in the Bible. However, we believe the Bible gives us clear principles for what it looks like to be part of a local Christian congregation.
The first-century church practiced consistent meeting together for encouragement, teaching, singing, prayer, and eating (Acts 2:42–46; 1 Corinthians 12–14; Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 2:9). These groups were seen as representing and proclaiming the kingdom of God in the world around them (Matthew 28:19–20; 1 Peter 2:9).
Not a means for leadership to manipulate or control members — or the other way around.
Not a way to determine who is in and who is out, nor to weigh a person's worth or value.
Not a means to somehow gain salvation. We are saved only by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ.
